The paratroopers would usually jump from varying heights, day or night, with a stabilized parachute, with full combat gear (kit bag, weapon, protective mask).  Parachute technology advanced rapidly from the originally used PD-47 via the GDR’s own RS series, up to the manoeuvrable RS9/2a, which enabled the deployment of paratroopers at an average wind speed of 12-13 m/s without problem. From the mid 80s the square canopy parachute RL-10/2 was used by reconaissance forces of the Airborne Infantry Battalion and Airborne Assault Regiment.
